Loomings 2011 Release

After a long few months of work, I am happy to report that Loomings, Benedictine College's literary magazine, is avaliable to the public! We had a wonderful little release party earlier this afternoon where we recognized the award winners and heard some great poems from the magazine read. It was so rewarding to work on such a beautiful magazine, especially as Co-Editor in Chief.
Best wishes to next year's editors!

Getting Ready for Loomings!

We're counting down the days until Loomings (the literary magazine I edit) comes back from the printers! In anticipation of its release, I'd like to share a poem of mine that is included. Enjoy!

Foreign

I couldn’t say for certain
why it is that I feel so
foreign to myself
when I speak about
the reigns of kings and the
mud most often used
for bricks in Kenya
but each time my mind
fights to understand those
things I do not know
my artist heart can’t help
but feel a little lost
about itself.

The Return, and the Answers

Did you miss me? I miss you, or more specifically I missed personal internet, space, and more than three pieces of clothing. I'll tell you all about Scotland soon. It was cold and wet, but fabulous.

But the long awaited answers have arrived... and if you missed the questions, find them here.

Okay, here you go:

1. How long did the Hundred Years War last? (116 Years)

2. Which country makes Panama hats? (Ecuador)

3. From which animal do we get catgut? (Sheep & Horses)

4. In which month do the Russians celebrate the October Revolution? (November)

5. What is a camel’s hair brush made of? (Squirrel fur)

6. The Canary Islands in the Pacific are named after what animal or bird? (Dogs.) [Canares, from the Latin, meaning dogs] (P.S. And the Canary Islands are in the Atlantic Ocean)

7. What was King George VI’s first name? (Albert)

8. What color is a Purple Finch? (Crimson)

9. Where are Chinese gooseberries from? (New Zealand)

10. How long did the Thirty Years War last? (Thirty years. GOT YOU ON THAT ONE.)

Peace.

A Parting Gift

Happy Halloween! Can't wait to see what kind of Italian devilry I will encounter today, even though I'm not even sure Halloween is a "thing" here. Guess I'll find out--I'll let you know.

As I am leaving for my fall break in Scotland in the morning and have utterly NO idea whether or not I will be able to access the internet while I am there, I am leaving you with some questions that should last you at least a week, if not longer. I will reveal the answers when I return on Saturday, just to keep you in suspense (and anticipating my return). Things should go on as normal around the site in the meantime, and a few posts are scheduled in my absence, just to make sure you don't run away. Also, I have a very special feature coming after the break, so stay tuned!

Enough talk. Here are your questions. (I should tell you that I can't take credit for these in the least, but found them floating about somewhere over a year ago.)

and last, but not least...

10. How long did the Thirty Years War last?

Have fun figuring them out!

The Unfortunate Facts of Life

Unfortunately it is possible to get sick, even when you are in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. My head has been bothering me quite a lot lately, and so I apologize for the lack of posting. I hope to get back to regular blogging soon.

If you're bored in the interim, please check out my Etsy store, JewelrybyJillOnline, here. That would make me feel better :)

Peace.

Alright, We'll Try this Again...

Here I go, off again! I'm getting all packed up and ready to leave for a wonderful stay in Italy for the fall semester of this year. This time I PROMISE to write more often. It will be a struggle, but here's to hoping it will go better than Ireland did.

peace,
